David Fincher Says Ben Affleck Was Right For 'Gone Girl' Because He Knows "What It’s Like To Be Hunted"

This fall, Ben Affleck will be thrust back into the spotlight, but his prominence will have nothing to do with his humanitarian work or his role as Batman. He’s the lead in David Fincher‘s "Gone Girl," but the director says that Affleck’s experience in the limelight made him the perfect choice for a movie about a man suspected of having a role in the disappearance of his wife who subsequently faces intense media scrutiny.

He knows “what it’s like to be hunted," the director tells EW. “We knew we needed somebody who was charming and could be seductive, who could be a ladies man, a guy’s guy, a frat boy. But most important, [someone] who had the wits and experience of knowing that situation. The gift of having Ben Affleck is that this is a guy who knows. He knows what a lose-lose situation is and understands what’s funny about it, however sad.”

Affleck concurs, telling the magazine, “I knew what it was like to have the tabloid world paying attention to me and ascribing negative motivations to whatever I might be engaging in. I knew what it was to be cast in a soap opera I had no control over.”

It certainly adds an interesting meta-layer to the movie, and we’ll see how it all works on October 3rd. Check out the EW "Gone Girl" cover below.

I have yet to see fincher pick a bad actor or actress. I doubt people thought brad Pitt or Morgan freeman would have been able to pull off seven or fight club before they saw it or Edward Norton in fight club to. Guess well find out.

this will rock like the past fincher movie….

What are they talking about him knowing what it's like to be "hunted" and all that drama of the "being in a soap opera" kind of thing? I don't recall any sort of scandal or big deal involving Affleck… Did I miss something? When was he ever hounded mercilessly and having all kinds of negative publicity other than maybe the occasional shellacking of his acting abilities after a film like Gigli or Daredevil or something? I've always felt like the reason he can't play the Bat is because of that whole "frat boy" thing and the fact that he HASN'T ever had a major tragedy or hardship like losing his parents. Is there some specific incidence they are referring to, or is it just meaning that he's experienced the paparazzi life in a fishbowl just because he's a celebrity? (I still wouldn't even go so far as to call him a "star"- though he does have some name recognition, he's not Tom Cruise or Jack Nicholson or even Bruce Willis)

Lol, i absolutely have seen a bad performance in a fincher movie.

Really doubted if Batfleck could pull this off? His character in Gone Girl is so different from his previously played roles. Hopefully, this movie brings out a new dimension of him. He has never been a good actor (but has the potential to be a Great director with his directorial efforts) so when he was cast to play Nick Dune was very skeptical if he could pull it off.

So let's see…..
