Fox Extends Market Share Lead As "Guardians"-Led Disney Makes A Charge

Thanks to Apes, X-Men and animation, Fox sits comfortably atop the 2014 Market Share pedestal, passing the $1 billion mark a few weeks back.  They currently have a cushy $160 million lead over Warners, which has been fueled by those LEGO figures and a big green lizard.  But the gang in Burbank have to be looking over their shoulder as that galloping they hear is Rocket Raccoon and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” heroes, who have moved Disney into third place and only $27 million back of second.  If all goes according to plan, BV should move into second position by later this week and will attempt to hold Warners off as they open “The Hundred-Foot Journey” this week while WB debuts both “Into the Storm” and “If I Fell” before summer finishes.  Both companies will hit $1 billion by this coming weekend.

Here’s how things sit as of last night, along with August openings for all companies.
