John Alvin may not be a household name, but the posters that he created for many of our most beloved films are some of the most recognizable in film history. “The Art of John Alvin,” a new book written by his widow Andrea Alvin, with a forward from Jeffrey Katzenberg, is being released August 26 by Titan Books. In it, Andrea offers some behind the scenes insights into how each poster was conceived and created and takes readers through a step-by-step process of how Alvin went about envisioning and painting some of the most iconic images in cinema.
Hand-drawn illustrations and hand painting techniques are almost never used when creating film posters today and much of Alvin’s work was created in anonymity without his signature. “It is time to connect the name John Alvin with the incredible body of work he created,” writes Andrea Alvin. “The world should know that there was one man responsible for so many of the iconic posters they admire and have hanging on their walls.”
