Sam Smith To Become First Openly Gay Person To Record James Bond Theme Song?

Sam Smith To Become First Openly Gay Person To Record James Bond Theme Song?

It’s being reported that Sam Smith is in talks with the producers of the 24th James Bond film — which remains untitled going into its November 2015 release — to record its theme.

The news comes after rumors that Adele rejected an initial offer to record the title track once again, following her Oscar-winning theme for "Skyfall." Notably that would have made her only the second person to record more than one "Bond" song — the other of course being Shirley Bassey.  Though there will be a different landmark set if Sam Smith ends up taking Adele’s place: He’ll be the first openly queer person to sing a Bond theme song, not to mention the first British male to do so since Tom Jones and "Thunderball."

We love us some Sam Smith, and are all for queer milestones of any positive kind, so clearly we’re all for him following in the footsteps of an impressive array of folks (many of them while not gay are certainly gay icons): Tina Turner, Madonna, Shirley Manson, Sheena Easton and Nancy Sinatra — not to mention Bassey and Adele.

The new Bond film will see the return of director Sam Mendes and star Daniel Craig, with Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris and Rory Kinnear rounding out the at the announced cast.

Speaking of Shirley Manson, I wonder when Garbage is going to make another album…

K.D. Lang performed "Surrender" over the end credits of "Tomorrow Never Dies." I believe it was intended to be the film's theme song, but was replaced by "Tomorrow Never Dies" recorded by Sheryl Crow.

Madonna is queer and has always been out about her interest in ladies and bi boys. She is the first out queer person to record a Bond theme. Women bisexuals count. Jeremy Staley owes his readers an apology, and a correction in the article.
