My favorite summer TV series is "Masters of Sex," which has deepened its exploration of male-female relationship dynamics in its second season. So I’m delighted to report that Showtime has renewed the hourlong series about the work and life of the famous sex research couple Masters and Johnson for a third season, along with hardboiled drime series "Ray Donovan," starring Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight.
Both shows are up for Emmy Awards, with “Masters of Sex” in contention for five including Lizzy Caplan– Allison Janney already won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend. Voight is a nominee for playing Mickey Donovan (more on movie stars who shine in TV roles here). (Why "Masters of Sex" is one of the best shows on television here.)
“Ray Donovan” averages five million weekly viewers on multiple platforms, with “Masters of Sex” coming in under four million weekly viewers.
Both series will start production of twelve-episodes in early 2015.
