While the Oscar contenders at the moment seem like an obvious bunch, one of the most exciting things about the awards season is seeing which movies come out of the blue and enter the race. Could Tommy Lee Jones‘ latest directorial effort “The Homesman” be one of them? Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, it earned good notices (our review), and, with Saban Films and Roadside Attractions teaming up to release the movie this fall, anew trailer is here to show off the goods.
Hilary Swank—in what looks like the first decent performance and role she’s had in ages—leads the picture, playing a frontierswoman who strikes a deal with a man she finds hanging from a noose and left for dead. She’ll cut him free if he agrees to escort her, and three insane women, from Nebraska to Iowa. And so begins an adventure fraught with danger at every turn, in what looks like a gorgeous effort all around.
“The Homesman” arrives on November 14th. Contender? Watch below and let us know.
