2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Actress in a Drama Series

2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Actress in a Drama Series

Indiewire’s TV Critic Ben Travers and Awards Editor Peter Knegt will provide regular updates on the Golden Globe races leading up to the ceremony on January 11 at 8pm ET.

No Kerry Washington? No problem. The Best Actress in a Drama Series is tight enough for anyone to win, even without the “Scandal” star bidding for her first trophy. Julianna Margulies already has one for “The Good Wife” and Claire Danes has two for “Homeland” (despite being snubbed for even a nod last year). Both will be looking to add to their trophy case this year.

Last year’s winner will be doing the same, but the Globes don’t like giving out more than one trophy per role. It would take a big push from Netflix to get her name in the envelope. The remaining two nominees may not need as much of a push. Both Ruth Wilson and Viola Davis lead hot freshman series, and both have strong cases for a winning ticket. Davis has been hailed in her first starring role on TV, while “How to Get Away With Murder” continues to lure in the audiences with its late-night-soap style twists.

Wilson, though, is the co-lead of “The Affair,” Showtime’s buzzy new romance featuring a more grounded but equally surprising story. “The Affair” scored three nods to “How to Get Away With Murder’s” one, and the HFPA has a history of rewarding otherwise-ignored Showtime programs (think David Duchovny for “Californication” or Matt LeBlanc for “Episodes”). Plus, they’ve given two to Wilson’s Showtime partner but Globes rival Danes. It might be time to spread the love, but who that benefits is yet to be known.
