2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie

2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie

Indiewire’s TV Critic Ben Travers and Awards Editor Peter Knegt will provide regular updates on the Golden Globe races leading up to the ceremony on January 11 at 8pm ET.

Jessica Lange has five wins in 14 tries. Let that sink in for a minute. She’s getting a win one out of every three nominations if she loses this year, and, frankly, she’s due for a win based on these statistics! After taking home the trophy for “American Horror Story’s” debut season, Lange has lost three times in a row. So either she wins this year, or somehow prizes for acting are not determined by a mathematical equation (hint: they’re not).

Joining Lange in the category are Oscar-winner Frances McDormand, Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal and Golden Globe nominee Frances O’Connor. One may think the latter person listed has the least shot at winning, considering the hardware in front of each name, but O’Connor’s Starz miniseries “The Missing” put up a pretty strong showing with two nominations. If it’s going to take home a trophy, it will be her who represents.

Working backwards, Gyllenhaal poured her heart and soul into a performance for SundanceTV’s “The Honorable Woman,” learning an accent and dragging her character through an emotional hell. She’s undoubtedly earned the trophy. Yet so has McDormand, who mined equally challenging emotional depths despite most of them being reflected inward. Her depressed title character painted a vivid picture of her world for us, and McDormand shepherded the project from start to finish as star and producer.

Then we have Allison Tolman. Though she was nominated for an Emmy earlier this year, the “Fargo” breakout had no prior accolades to mention. If we compared only the background of each actress, Tolman would have no shot. Luckily for her, it only takes one great role to earn yourself a Globe.

The Nominees:

Maggie Gyllenhaal – “The Honorable Woman”
Jessica Lange – “American Horror Story: Freak Show”
Frances McDormand – “Olive Kitteridge”
Frances O’Connor – “The Missing”
Allison Tolman – “Fargo”

Ben’s Predictions:

Could Win: Allison Tolman – “Fargo”
Should Win: Frances McDormand – “Olive Kitteridge”

Peter’s Predictions:

Could Win: Jessica Lange – “American Horror Story: Freak Show”
Should Win: Frances McDormand – “Olive Kitteridge”
Shoulda Been Here: Cicely Tyson – “The Trip to Bountiful”
