2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV Movie

Indiewire’s TV Critic Ben Travers and Awards Editor Peter Knegt will provide regular updates on the Golden Globe races leading up to the ceremony on January 11 at 8pm ET.

A month from now, when the ceremony is actually held, this category may still be remembered more by who’s been excluded rather than who made the cut. Sofia Vergara, a perennial nominee for the past four years, didn’t make the cut (along with the rest of her “Modern Family” cast). The Oscar-winning Julia Roberts also missed the cut, despite landing an Emmys nomination and being one of the most famous eligible candidates (always a preference among the HFPA).

But alas: they didn’t make the cut, so let’s get down to who did. After two Emmy nominations, Joanne Froggatt finally broke into the Globes race for “Downton Abbey.” It’s often difficult for actors to break into the HFPA if they don’t score on their first few eligible seasons, but the British melodrama has remained a favorite with the group, perhaps leading to a second (and third, and fourth) consideration.

Allison Janney landed her fifth nomination and first for a show not called “The West Wing.” After taking home two Emmys in August, Janney is hoping to keep her hot streak going at the Beverly Hilton. The same goes for Uzo Aduba who’s coming off a win at the Emmys — the only Primetime trophy for “Orange is the New Black.” They’ll have to fend off Oscar-winner Kathy Bates if they want the Globe, and the “American Horror Story” actress has yet to win one for TV. You better believe the two-time winner wants to be on that stage again.

Last but not least is Michelle Monaghan, who’s one of the bigger question marks of the race. Some critics weren’t pleased about the portrayal of women in “True Detective,” but Monaghan’s gripping, time-jumping performance earns raves no matter your stance on the character’s three-dimensionality. If the HFPA loves “True Detective,” she could walk away with this one. If not, she’s likely to be last on the ballot.
