Cinefamily announces its Animation Breakdown 2014 Festival for November 20-24

The Cinefamily announced initial programming details for its Animation Breakdown 2014 festival this morning.  Cinefamily’s week-long slate of mind-expanding international animation, old and new, shorts and features includes Annecy award winner, the Brazilian GKids pick-up, The Boy and the World; rare 35mm screenings of Martin Rosen’s Watership Down and The Plague Dogs; live appearances by longtime Simpsons director David Silverman, Superjail creator Christy Karacas and special ABD 2014 honoree Suzan Pitt (Asparagus);  a retrospective look at early Internet animation portal Newgrounds; the rarely screened Hungarian masterpiece Son of the White Mare and much more. 

Thursday, Nov. 20, 7:30pm
SON OF THE WHITE MARE
The 1981 experimental pop-art fairy tale with an incredibly unique style and sound design, from Hungarian animation wizard Marcell Jankovics.  The film’s mythic folk narrative is filtered through the sensibility of outstanding disparate elements, like psychedelic poster design, art deco and art nouveau touches.

DAVID SILVERMAN’S CARTOON FAVORITES
Known throughout the animation universe for his award-winning directorial work on The Simpsons, Monsters, Inc.and so much more, David Silverman comes to Cinefamily to present a collection of his favorite cartoons, complete with commentary and frame-by-frame analysis.  This is one show that fans of pop culture, toon history, and just plain old cool stuff can’t miss.

WATERSHIP DOWN (shown in 35mm)
This 1978 British animation classic returns with a newly restored 35mm print.

THE PLAGUE DOGS (shown in 35mm)
Following the success of Watership Down, director Martin Rosen adapts another Richard Adams novel, improving upon his unique combination of anthropomorphized animals with decidedly mature emotional themes.

“SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK” WITH BOB DOROUGH 
Perhaps the most iconic of all ’70s Saturday morning cartoons, this program is highlighted by a live performance from Bob Dorough, the original composer and performer of Schoolhouse Rock‘s most memorable tunes.

SUZAN PITT: A.B.D. HONOREE 2014 
Our 2014 festival honoree, Suzan Pitt will present a collection of film prints spanning her 45-year career as an animator, and a special gallery show of paintings.

KINGDOM OF DREAMS AND MADNESS 
This intimate documentary chronicles Studio Ghibli’s production of The Wind Rises. Director Mami Sunada captures a rare, fly-on-the-wall glimpse into the creative process of Hayao Miyazaki as he works on his final masterpiece.

A BOY AND HIS WORLD (O Menino e o Mundo)
After making the rounds, and winning awards, on the international festival circuit, Alê Abreu’s breathtakingly gorgeous feature gets its LA premiere.

NEWGROUNDS: EVERYTHING BY EVERYONE 
Newgrounds was the first site to allow anyone and everyone to upload animated content.  What followed was a revolution led by professionals, amateurs, teenagers, trolls and some of the biggest animators on the web today.
