Lionsgate Launching Contest to Select 5 Aspiring Women Directors to Make Shorts Based on 'Twilight' Characters

Lionsgate has announced a new short film competition created specifically for aspiring women filmmakers, so get your ideas ready!

In short, the contest, titled “Storytellers – New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga,” will give participants the opportunity to create short films based on characters in the studio’s blockbuster “Twilight” film franchise. The films will be developed and produced with Lionsgate, who will be spending a “significant” amount on them.

The announcement was made via the New York Times last night.

The selection process of the competition will be primarily social media-based (specifically Facebook) and the final 5 (or more) films will debut on Facebook in 2015. The contest will be run through Tongal, a service that allows brands and contestants to pitch and share ideas.

“We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of ‘Twilight’ to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans,” Michael Burns, Lions Gate’s vice chairman, said in an interview.

The contest’s voting board consists of several familiar names, including two that are closely tied to the “Twilight” series – Stephenie Meyer and Kristen Stewart – as well as Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Lee, Catherine Hardwicke, Julie Bowen, and Women In Film President Cathy Schulman.

Lionsgate says the movies will “include films based on a broad spectrum of characters from the Twilight universe,” and that the characters will be canon thanks to the use of “The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide” (the series’ encyclopedia published in 2011).

Speaking to the New York Times, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said: “This is the just the beginning — a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next.”

Contest details are still being worked out, but once it’s live, they will be made available on Tongal.com. Although we will alert you to the official launch when it happens, so stay tuned. In the meantime, if you think this is something you’d like to participate in, you may want to start working your ideas generator, although we don’t have a lot to go on just yet – other than that the final films will be based on characters from the film franchise.
