Project of the Day: 'Open Roads'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Open Roads

Tweetable Logline: Granted day release from a mental health facility to attend a funeral, Brian takes his son on a road trip that neither will soon forget.

Elevator Pitch: “Open Roads” tells the story of Brian, a bipolar man who is allowed to leave his psychiatric treatment center for his mother’s funeral. When he reunites with his six-year-old son David, he sees that his son is miserable living with Brian’s sister and brother-in-law. Fearful that his son’s happiness is at stake, Brian decides to take matters into his own hands and escapes with David on an impromptu road trip. Driven by euphoria and love for his son, Brian embarks on the journey full-throttle despite the chaos it causes in the world around him.

About the film: “Open Roads” began as my personal response to witnessing stigma against individuals with mental health conditions, as well as a lack of understanding in media portrayals. Looking beyond the labels of diagnosis, Open Roads tells the story of a young father who is trying to be the guardian his son deserves. It is a story about the choices we make for those we love and, ultimately, a story about hope in the face of an uncertain world.

Current Status: Fundraising for production in November 2014
