Yesterday, the first look at "Terminator: Genisys" arrived and fans were not happy. From the smiling Terminator to the generic, glossy blockbuster look, many felt it was a far cry from the more distinct vision James Cameron created in the first two films of the series. And fans were further concerned with the details revealed about the twist being taken with Sarah Connor (though I’d say it’s no more or less ridiculous than "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" ret-conning their timeline or any Marvel movie plot, but I digress). And today, here come a couple more images which will surely continue the dismayed chatter.
In fairness, most of these images from EW look more like promo images than stills from a finished movie. That being said, Emilia Clarke and Matt Smith armed with guns and yelling isn’t exactly the most compelling first look for a movie that is aiming to reinvigorate a diluted blockbuster brand. “In our minds there was never a version of this movie that we were making without Arnold Schwarzenegger,” producer David Ellison said about taking on this challenge.
“I knew eventually that another Terminator was going to get made,” Arnold Schwarzenegger said, adding with a bit of arrogance perhaps that, “People always have to go through that painful experience of doing a sequel, or something like that, without me.” Okay dude.
Anyway, marketing is a long tail game (the budget for the movie alone is $170 million, and we’re sure the advertising bucks will be sizable), and there’s still plenty of time until next summer when this movie arrives. But hey Paramount, if you want to change the tide of opinion, the first trailer for this movie better be killer…
"Terminator: Genisys" arrives on July 1, 2015. Update 12/2: Oh hey, the new motion poster is below too. Update 12/3: Watch a quick teaser of tomorrow’s trailer.
