Crowdfund This: Ytasha Womack’s Afrofuturist Sci-Fi Feature Film ‘Bar Star City’

Author and
filmmaker Ytasha Womack can rightly lay claim to writing the book on
Afrofuturism. Her 2013 groundbreaking book “Afrofuturism: The World of Black
Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture” has become the definitive book on examining sci-fi
literature, music and visual art of Afrofuturists who strive to break down
racial, ethnic, and social limitations to empower and free individuals to be
themselves.

Along with
her more recent sci-fi book, “Rayla 2212,” Ms. Womack is also a filmmaker (“The
Engagement,” “Love Shorts”). But, where as her previous films were romantic
comedies, for her next project, she has moved on to write and direct a
sci-fi film next, titled “Bar Star City.”

As she says “after writing Afrofuturism, I decided that I
wanted to do a film that looked at the phenomena and sci fi possibilities all
around us…. especially in our urban haunts.”

She also
adds that her new film “looks at love,
deception, memory and alienation amongst a group of bar regulars who just want
a place to call home….Think the TV classic Cheers meets Funkadelic’s Maggot
Brain meets that funny dream you had last night that you decided to keep to
yourself.”

And now to see her vision come to reality, Ms. Womack has launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign to raise $9,500 in less
than 30 days to help her complete her film.

And since we
always have commenters on the site talking about how they want to see more
black filmmakers making sci-fi films, here’s the chance to help one out.
