There are cult movies, and then there are the movies of Polish filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk. If you’ve regular at revival houses over the past decade or so, perhaps you’re seen “The Beast” or “Immoral Tales” in a midnight movie lineup, screening via a battered print with warped sound. But if you want to see them again on the big screen or you want to check them out for the first time, those Borowczyk films are coming back in fully restored prints ready to be discovered and re-discovered. Today we have the exclusive trailers for both films.
Arriving first in 1974, “Immoral Tales” travels through time, presenting four erotic tale in different historical eras. Meanwhile, “The Beast,” re-released the next year, chronicles the relationship between the titular creature and a young beauty. Mixing fairy tale elements, fantasy, eroticism and melodrama, Borowczyk’s films straddle the line between the sensual and pornographic, depending on who you ask, and initially stirred controversy. But there is also nothing quite like them and are definitely worth tracking down.
IFC Midnight will bring “The Beast” to cinemas on December 5th, with “Immoral Tales” following on December 12th. Check out trailers and posters for both below.
