Is Hollywood finally starting to embrace the musicality of its musicals? Remember that the “Annie” trailer had more or less no singing, as did the first “Into the Woods” teaser. But the latest full-length trailer for the Sondheim fairy-tale, set for Christmas Day release, isn’t afraid to brandish the fact that it’s a musical.
Watch Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and more sing in the trailer below, which should delight Sondheim fans. It’s directed by Rob Marshall, who needs a hit after “Nine” failed to repeat the razzle-dazzle success of “Chicago.”
More news in the world of movie/musical crossovers: Lionsgate will raise the curtain on a “Hunger Games” live show in 2016, Variety reports. By then, the film franchise will have wrapped, with “Mockingjay – Part 2” bowing November 2015. The studio will team with Triangular Entertainment and Dutch media company Imagine Nation to bring the production a new theater near Wembley Stadium in London. Imagine Nation is known for mounting several large-scale, immersive shows to Hollywood, including “Soldier of Orange” in a hangar turned 360-rotating auditorium.
You can catch “Mockingjay – Part 1” when it opens November 21. But not on IMAX! “Hunger Games” is the latest victim of the “Interstellar” coup. NYT has more here.
