Hulu’s original content output will soon be growing even more as the online streaming platform has issued a straight-to-series pick-up for “Difficult People” from executive producers Amy Poehler (“Parks & Recreation”) and Dave Becky (“Louie”). The half-hour comedy series marks the first collaboration between Hulu and Universal Cable Productions and is set to start production early next year.
Starring comedian Julie Klausner and Emmy-nominee Billy Eichner (the host of the incredibly popular web series “Billy on the Street” and “Parks and Recreation” cast member), “Difficult People” follows two best friends living in New York City and their typical, irreverent behavior that lands them in some very awkward situations. Klausner wrote the pilot and also serves as an executive producer for the series.
“Amy Poehler, Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner are a dream team of comedic possibilities. We look forward to bringing this hilarious view of the world to Hulu with our partners at Universal Cable Productions,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content, Hulu.
The comedy series joins Hulu’s growing slate of original content, including recent straight-to-series pick-up orders for Jason Reitman’s comedy series “Casual” and the epic Stephan King-adapted event series “11/22/63” from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions.
Poehler also voices a character on Seth Meyers’ Hulu series “The Awesomes.” She can next be seen hosting the Golden Globe awards with Tina Fey on January 11 before “Parks and Recreation” returns for its final season in 2015.
