R.I.P. The Joiners’ Arms!?!

R.I.P. The Joiners' Arms!?!

If you’ve ever ventured to London’s East End in search of good time, we’d only hope you ended up at The Joiners’ Arms, the Hackney Road gay bar in Shoreditch that opened in 1997. If you haven’t, the clock is sadly ticking. The management has been informed that their current lease — which expired in January, 2015 — will not be renewed because a development company is going to demolish it and build fucking apartments.

The folks that run the bar are looking for a new venue, at least. But that doesn’t change the fact that the bar’s closure marks another nail in the coffin of gay nightlife that’s being threatened by both skyrocketing rents and online cruising/dating.

Take solace in this extensive look back at the history of TJA thanks to Vice, and go have a drink at your local gay bar tonight. Every sip counts.
