Sanaa Lathan (like so many other black actresses) simply doesn’t work as much as I think she should, especially in starring roles. It seems like it’s been so long since we last saw her on the big screen – although, she was in “Best Man Holiday” last year. In recent years, she’s mostly been giving voice to cartoon characters in TV series like “Family Guy” and “The Cleveland Show,” which, I’m sure, help pay the bills. But I assume, like any other performer series about their craft, she’d like to actually appear on screen and be given opportunities to use her skills, better them and grow over time.

She’ll get to do just that in the sequel to “Now You See Me,” currently titled “Now You See me 2,” playing an FBI agent named Natalie Austin, on the hunt for the magician troupe known as the Four
Horseman, a year later, as they take on a new dangerous heist for a new enemy.

Lathan
joins the film’s original cast members in Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo,
Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, as well as
newcomers Lizzy Caplan, Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe.

Shooting begins next month in the UK, and the movie is currently set for a June 10, 2016 release.

Also on Lathan’s upcoming slate are the thriller “The Perfect Guy” with Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut, which will be in theaters next year, and she recently wrapped filming on the Sundance Lab-developed feature “Ad Inexplorata” – a curious sci-fi project in
which she stars as the head of a spaceship fleet on a
one-way trip to Mars. She’s joined by Mark Strong and
Luke Wilson in the film.
