“Cinderella” has never been my favorite fairy tale — there’s a lot of shoe obsession and waiting around for the prince. So I’m hoping Kenneth Branagh’s live-action take on it, starring Lily James (Downton Abbey) as the soot-covered servant-turned-princess, will convince me of the fairy tale’s charms when it opens March 13.
A sprinkling of humor and self-awareness — and very lush production values — makes the new trailer highly watchable. The Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) assures “Ella” that the glass slippers are “really comfortable,” and it’s fun to see the CG mice grow giant hooves and transform into ivory steeds.
But the best reason to watch this new take might be Cate Blanchett as Cinderella’s stepmother, who coolly informs her new charge to call her not “Stepmother” but “Madam” and strolls around her mansion with her cat on a leash.
Cinderella was written by Chris Weitz and Aline Brosh McKenna (Annie, The Devil Wears Prada).
