Watch: Get Naked and Take to the Streets in 'Free The Nipple' Trailer

Did you know it is illegal for a woman to be topless in 37 states? In some states that includes breastfeeding, and in others, such as Louisiana, a topless woman can be arrested and sentenced to up to three years in jail and a $2,500 fine. Even in cities like New York where it has become legal for women to be topless, police officers continue to make arrests, an action that has given fire to the Free The Nipple campaign.

A real life revolution that has transcended the bounds of entertainment, Free The Nipple is a social empowerment movement that attempts to smash societal taboos regarding women’s bodies. Over the years, the movement has gained the support of celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Liv Tyler, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne, Shepard Fairey, Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, Russell Simmons and many more.

The movement was inspired by director Lina Esco’s “Free the Nipple,” which follows a group of fearless women as they fight for their right to go topless in public one breast at a time. Based on a true story, the spirited satire follows New York City activists Liv and With as they take their crusade for gender equality from the streets of the urban jungle to the courts.

“Nipple” stars Esco opposite Lola Kirke (“Gone Girl”), Monique Coleman (“High School Musical”) and Zach Grenier (“The Good Wife”). IFC Films will release the movie theatrically and on Video On Demand December 12.
