Watch: Meryl Streep Proves Her Singing Chops in New 'Into the Woods' Featurette

The last trailer for “Into the Woods” gave us a small taste of the A-list cast’s vocal performances, which were just promising enough to leave us wanting more. This week, the latest feauturette spoils us with one whole minute of Streep singing “Stay with Me.”

We first heard the three-time Oscar winner sing in “Mamma Mia,” but Sondheim’s difficult melodies are on a completely different level than ABBA. Streep solidifies her singing chops in this latest video by belting out one of the show’s more challenging numbers. She even received praise from Sondheim himself for her nuanced performance.

Meryl Streep is so remarkable,” he says in the video. “She is able to find colors in lyric that I’ve rarely come across. She can do a number of takes on the songs in the recording studio and every take is different in some way.” Hopefully “Into the Woods” will break the trend of recent movie musicals and turn out to be something other than a major disappointment. If this video is any indication, at least the music seems great.

Directed by Rob Marshall, “Into the Woods” comes out on Christmas day. Check out the featurette below.
