“I love Meryl Streep,” President Obama confessed as he presented the three-time Oscar winner yesterday with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
“Her husband knows I love her. Michelle knows I love her. There’s nothing either of them can do about it,” he joked. In his two-minute speech commending Streep (watch below), he also cited a pretty fantastic Onion headline: “Court Rules Meryl Streep Unable To Be Tried By Jury As She Has No Peers.”
Obama described the 18 recipients of the Medal of Freedom as “people who have made America stronger and wiser and more humane and more beautiful.” The other honorees included actress Marlo Thomas, author Isabel Allende, Native American activist Suzan Harjo, physicist Mildred Dresselhaus, and now-deceased Congresswoman Patsy Mink.
