everyone knows what film was going to be first place this weekend, the big
question was, what film would come in second – the sequel or the spin off?
answer is the spinoff – Fox/Dreamworks’ T”he Penguins of Madagascar,” with a five day
holiday total of $36 million, while “Horrible Bosses 2” came in 5th, with a five day total of $23 million.
Meanwhile, while “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” (they can’t make these titles less simple
can they?) dropped some 53% from last week, it still held on for the
No.1 slot, with a five day total of $56 million, and a total box office of almost $225.7 million. This means, the way it’s going, it will br only the second
film to hit $300 million or more domestically – the only other one being “The Guardians of the Galaxy.”
“Big Hero 6” and “Interstellar” are still holding up very well, and “Gone Girl” just seems stuck in 8th
place, still steadily making money week after week.
As for “Beyond
the Lights,” the film dropped another 40% for 11th place. This, despite an open letter by director Gina Prince-Bythewood, that was posted
online, asking people to check the film out.
It was a
heartfelt and sincere attempt, but, as I pointed out two weeks ago (HERE), the
film just had one too many disadvantages going against it, including being released
at the wrong time of the year, and a marketing campaign that was more harmful than
