Who's He Playing? Daniel Bruhl Joins 'Captain America: Civil War'

When you’re as successful as Marvel, you get your pick of actors. It speaks to their growing stature that they recently snagged Benedict Cumberbatch to play “Doctor Strange,” and now they’ve roped another acclaimed actor into their fold.

The studio announced today that Daniel Bruhl has joined the cast of “Captain America: Civil War.” The actor is likely best known for his turns in “Good Bye Lenin!,” “The Bourne Ultimatum,” Quentin Tarantino‘s “Inglourious Basterds,” and Ron Howard‘s “Rush.” In both foreign and Hollywood films he’s always a welcome presence, but who will he play here?

Well, Marvel isn’t saying (though Deadline reports Bruhl will take a villain role), so we’re going to leave it you to guess below. But remember, this third installment of the ‘Captain America’ franchise will likely see Chris Evans‘ Steve Rogers and Robert Downey’s Jr.‘s Tony Stark on opposing sides.

“Captain America: Civil War” opens May 6, 2016. Here’s the press release:

Daniel Bruhl (“Rush,” “Inglourious Basterds”) has joined the cast of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6, 2016.
The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard’s “Rush.” In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.
Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in “Captain America: Civil War,” with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after this year’s hit Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
“With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Producer Kevin Feige.

Bruhl is represented by Tavistock Wood Management, Players Agentur Management, and WME.

Cable Guy again

After reading my above comment, I’ve decided my days of giving away free hilarity on "comments boards" are over. I’m quitting my job as Cable Guy and moving to Hollywood, where I will instantly find work as an A-List writer. Good bye, Indiwire, you’ll get no more genius from me.

Cable Guy

Dan Bruhl is playing a jerky internet critic, but don’t worry, there’s no litigious case here because the studio wisely calls the character "Shmevin Shmagershmauf." Pretty genius, if you ask me.

I was thinking Doctor Faustus as well

Emperor Zerg Rush

As Marvel now seems hellbent on blowing through all their major storylines in one large swoop, it’s a true mystery. My top guesses are either Baron Zemo or Doctor Faustus. The latter seems like a safe bet.
