Baffling First Official Synopsis For Terrence Malick's 'Knight Of Cups' Unveiled

Terrence Malick broke the internet yesterday afternoon, when the first trailer for his forthcoming “Knight Of Cupslanded online and blew most people away (but seriously: how has no one mashed up the voiceover with “The Dark Knight” trailers yet?). But as per usual, it was light on plot, heavy on visuals (which is what Malick’s movies usually are anyway). So what is the movie about? Well, all we know so far is from a logline which states that movie tells the “story of a man, temptations, celebrity, and excess.” But now there’s a new, much longer, more abstract tease regarding the (non?) narrative of the film.

Screen Daily has the latest official synopsis for “Knight Of Cups,” and it tells a story…and that’s about it. It’s a bit baffling, a bit mystical, and totally Malick. Here you go:

Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.
Rick’s (Christian Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy.
The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?

Okay, then. Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Imogen Poots, Brian Dennehy, Jason Clarke, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley and more feature in “Knight Of Cups.” No distributor or release date yet. Do you have an interpretation of the synopsis? Share it with us in the comments section.
