'Nightcrawler' Wins 7 San Diego Film Critics Prizes, Cotillard Takes Best Actress

While this sleazy, smart thriller remains an Oscar dark horse for leading actor Jake Gyllenhaal and original screenwriter/first-time director Dan Gilroy, “Nightcrawler” all but swept the San Diego Film Critics Society awards. Best Supporting Actress winner Rene Russo got some much-deserved love for her performance as a blood-grubbing morning news director, as did cinematographer Robert Elswit, who’s more likely to land an Oscar nomination for “Inherent Vice,” another film set in LA’s dark demimondes.

We’ve been rooting for “Nightcrawler” since it premiered at Toronto. Last week, Jake Gyllenhaal surprise-landed both SAG and Golden Globes nominations for his portrayal of camera-wielding sociopath Lou Bloom, a destined movie icon alongside “Taxi Driver”‘s Travis Bickle.

Here’s the full list of San Diego winners, which notably includes Marion Cotillard for “Two Days, One Night,” who was snubbed by both the Golden Globes and SAG.
