Awards season news is flying fast and furious as Indiewire critic Eric Kohn and I parse the final nominations for the SAG Awards and Golden Globes with my old Oscar Talk cohort Kris Tapley, who writes In Contention at Hitfix. It doesn’t take long for Kris and I to tangle over the future fates of frontrunners “Boyhood,” “Birdman,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything,” as late surging “Selma” comes up fast on the outside. Where are “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Foxcatcher,” not to mention “Interstellar”? And what happened to Angelina Jolie’s expected Globe contender “Unbroken”?
Then Eric and I roll out our best of the year, winding up with our respective Top Ten lists. And yes, his choices are predictably more arcane. We share a few, including the same Number Six. And both the New York Times critic Manohla Dargis and I include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s well-reviewed but woefully under-marketed “Beyond the Lights.”
