John Oliver has taken on enough big issues in his freshman season to justify taking a bit of a break — and we’re not just talking about his show’s temporary time off. In a web exclusive released today, Oliver doesn’t discuss the escalating racial disparity in the U.S. or something of equal magnitude (like the Oscars). Instead, he spends three-and-a-half minutes telling us why New Year’s Eve is “the worst.”
He’s not wrong, at least about most of his claims. I won’t spoil the brief video for you (shown below), but I will recommend ignoring one piece of Oliver’s advice. Do not, under any circumstance, watch the fifth “Die Hard” film, “A Good Day to Die Hard.” One through four are terrific, but boy did they mess up No. 5. If you need a substitute, I’d recommend “The Expendables.” It’s exactly what you’re looking for after four “Die Hard’s,” I promise.
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” returns to HBO in 2015.
