The press room at the Golden Globes can be a bit overwhelming. TVs blast the ceremony for a crowd of a few hundred reporters, organizers and crew members, but only until the winners we just saw claim their prize walk into the room. Then you can choose to keep listening to the ceremony, via a dual-station headset, or take fervent notes from your dining table chair positioned just close enough to others to make you feel a bit trapped.
Yet when the winners walk in, all the noise and energy becomes an electric force running through the room, picking up as the giddy victors joke and laugh as they bask in the glow of an amazing night. It’s hard to hold onto any cynicism when they’re having so much fun. The following are the quotes that best exemplify that joy, enthusiasm and overall experience of speaking to someone after their dream just came true. Or, if you’d rather, the funniest things your favorite celebrities said backstage.
“I can’t believe I fucking won.”
– Kevin Spacey, during his acceptance speech. It was censored from the telecast.
“Bottom line, not to be glib and not to be slogan-y, but this is about changing people’s lives and I’m honored to be a small part of that.”
“My second thought was I think I have a TV show.”
– Jill Soloway, remembering when her trans parent came out to her.
“Did you just say Jill? Like Jill Soloway? I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“I’m not much of a drinker, so I’m going to eat seven pounds of pork.”
– Billy Bob Thornton, after being asked how he’ll celebrate his win.
“I didn’t even think that was a joke.”
“Women have been waiting in the wings for a long time, and they’re ready to take center, storytelling stage.”
“They are probably the most special letters I’ve ever received in my life.”
“We all need to remember we have the same stories and see them as such.”
“Do I talk or do you? This is my first time.”
“This is a tough question right after winning a Golden Globe.”
Maggie Gyllenhaal, when asked about Israeli/Palestinian relations for her first question.
“Do you guys remember the television series Columbo? Do you remember the murder weapon was always something like that (points to the Golden Globe trophy)?”
“I’m very pleased not to have ended up the Susan Lucci of the Golden Globes.”
– Kevin Spacey, on winning his first trophy after eight nominations.
