Next week, the Oscar nominations will be unveiled, and don’t be surprised if “American Sniper” has a strong showing. While reviews have been mixed, whoever has been working that campaign has done a great job because not only has the film been crushing it in limited release, it has been bubbling steadily in the awards season conversation. Now Warner Bros. is taking things up a notch.
EW reveals that the studio will unveil the film in “digitally remastered” IMAX when it hits screens in wide release next Friday, January 16th. It’s an interesting move for the sniper drama, perhaps indicating that Warner Bros. wants to make a play for a bigger mainstream audience. We’ll see whether it works or not, but it’s a smart move given that January is quiet month for new releases, and there’s room for a movie like “American Sniper” to really pick up speed.
So, as you wait for the picture to play near you, check out this 8-minute Q&A with Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper from last month, along with two new featurettes for the film. And expect to hear more about this movie in coming weeks—its awards season ain’t over yet.
