For an upcoming episode of Disney’s Phineas and Ferb set 10 years in the future with Phineas and the gang as teenagers about to head off to college – the creators turned to a super-fan of the series to help visualize how the characters might look a decade hence.

For the episode, titled “Act Your Age,” which will premiere on Monday Feb. 9th, the character designs of the teenaged Phineas and Ferb were inspired by artwork that a 25-year-old fan named Ashley Simpson (no relation to the recording artist) presented to series co-creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh at Comic-Con two years ago.  After coming up with a storyline that would place Phineas and Ferb in the future, Dan and Swampy remembered the drawing and reached out to Ashley via social media and hired her to work with them on the episode.

Here’s the initial tweet from Dan Povenmire:

Ashley responded back – and here’s a featurette featuring her experience behind the scenes at Disney Television Animation in Glendale:

Synopsis: “Act Your Age” is a special half-hour episode set ten years in the future, where a teenaged Phineas must decide between two colleges while grappling with the discovery that Isabella has had a crush on him since they were kids. Ferb and the gang try to bring the two together so they can admit their true feelings for each other before Isabella leaves for school. Act Your Age premieres Monday, February 9 (8:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD. Spoiler Alert: The episode also has Dr. Doofenschmirtz grappling with a mid-life crisis.
