Immersed In Movies: 'Dragon 2' Grabs 4 VES Noms

Dean DeBlois’ acclaimed How
to Train Your Dragon 2
is not only in contention for an Oscar nomination
but also received
four VES noms on Monday (animated feature, animated character: Hiccup, Oasis environment,
and The Battle simulation). And we
have this exclusive VFX reel, which premiered last year at SIGGRAPH 2014 in
Vancouver.

Supervised by David Walvoord,
Dragon 2 harnesses the power of DreamWorks’ new Apollo
platform, consisting of Premo for animation — which allows artists to pose on
tablets and get instant playback of high-res models — and Torch for lighting,
which delivers more complex imagery and gets data quickly through the pipeline.
It’s all about fire and ice as the world of Dragons expands into more
exotic and epic regions, courtesy of production designer Pierre-Olivier Vincent.
