L.A. EVENT ALERT: “Janet In Cartoonland”

L.A. EVENT ALERT: "Janet In Cartoonland"

Personal Plug: On the first Thursday of every month, I screen several vintage 16mm cartoons and musical shorts as an “opening act” for Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. Klein and her band – some of the best musicians in town – have been performing music and songs of the 1920s and 30s for ten years each month at the popular Los Feliz venue.  And its great music, great fun and a great show.

This month, due to New Years Day falling on the first Thursday, Janet and the Boys are performing this coming Saturday night, January 17th – and its a special show. It’s “Janet Klein in Cartoonland” a celebration of classic Hollywood cartoons with music from animated films, inspired by cartoons or characters in cartoons – Fleischer, Looney Tunes, etc.

I will haul my old Bell and Howell projector to the theater and start the show at 8pm with several early-talkie pre-code musical cartoons – and then the real show will start. Just to tie this even closer to animation – I should note Janet Klein was recently featured on the sound track (as the teacher in Episode 3 Schooltown Follies) of Cartoon Network’s Over The Garden Wall – and she has also done voices for Adventure Time.

The cool set (pictured above) was designed by animator Thom Foolery. It’s worth the admission just to see this backdrop in person! For more information on the show, visit the Steve Allen Theatre website, Janet’s Facebook page or her homepage
