Ana Lily Amirpour’s black-and-white Persian vampire drama “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” was the breakout discovery of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Almost exactly one year later comes news of Amirpour’s sophomore feature: Titled “The Bad Bach,” the new project — said to be focused on cannibals — will be jointly produced by VICE and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures.
Ellison will produce alongside VICE Executive Creative Director Danny Gabai and “Girl” producer Sina Sayyah.
The collaboration comes on the heels of VICE’s partnership with Annapurna on the A24 release “Spring Breakers” in 2013. VICE also worked with Ellison’s company on Wong Kar-Wai’s “The Grandmaster” and Spike Jonze’s “Her.” Meanwhile, the expanding media company also worked on the release of Amirpour’s debut, which was released by Kino Lorber to great acclaim and commercial success last fall.
“Ana Lily is a force of cinematic nature,” said VICE Chief Creative Officer Eddy Moretti in a statement. “She inhabits that special place where the pop sensibility of the movies meets the deep sensuality of film art. It’s a tricky thing to pull off – creating this kind of wildly entertaining visionary cinema – but Ana Lily is powerful, so she can pull it off. I’m thrilled and honored to help bring ‘The Bad Batch’ to life with my friends at Annapurna. This is going to be a lot of fun.”
