The Alvin Show – a classic TV cartoon that aired in prime time on CBS in 1961 & 1962 – is apparently coming to DVD and blu-ray.
“Apparently” is the operative word, as the product was just listed on Amazon.com with almost no details. Will it be all 26 half hours? Will there be any bonus features? Is it restored from the original elements? Will it include all the Clyde Crashcup segments?
Here’s the box art:
Record producer and songwriter Ross Bagdasarian created Alvin and The Chipmunks for a novelty single in 1958. The recording and subsequent records were so successful that CBS ordered a series from Bagdasarian and Format Films. The series format (and roughly the essential design of the chipmunks) is still the scenario in the movies and series today. CBS/Viacom held the rights to the original series for decades.
Apparently (there’s that word again) the Bagdasarian estate now controls the series and is putting it out on March 14th. The Bagadasarians self-distributed a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of the feature length The Chipmunk Movie (1987) last year (and it included one of the original Alvin Show segments as a bonus feature). At $14.99, this new Alvin Show set is a bargain for whatever content is on it. I’ll take a chance.
Here’s the opening of the show off You Tube. Hopefully the quality of the new blu-ray will be much better:
