Trailer Watch: Juliette Binoche and Rinko Kikuchi Explore the Arctic in 'Nobody Wants the Night'

Following in the footsteps of Wild and TracksSpanish director Isabel Coixet’s Nobody Wants the Night finds Juliette Binoche braving the unforgiving forces of nature in the Arctic hinterlands.

This time, though, the central adventuress will be joined by a female companion. Binoche plays Josephine Peary, a wealthy woman who goes in search of her missing explorer husband Robert in 1908 Greenland. One of her guides is Allaka (Rinko Kikuchi), an Inuit woman, who happens to be carrying Robert’s baby.

We’re a bit troubled by the Noble Savage trope the trailer seems to imply — hopefully Coixet will develop a deeper relationship between the two women than is implied here. And of course we wish an Inuit actress had been cast instead of the Japanese Kikuchi. But we’re definitely looking forward to another epic adventure starring women, which are so infuriatingly rare, and we always look forward to Binoche’s fascinating projects.

Nobody Wants the Night will open the Berlinale on February 5.
