Independent horror film experienced a rather unexpected yet welcome resurgence last year, thanks to Jennifer Kent’s psychological nightmare “The Babadook.” So it’s not too far-fetched for us to think that the upcoming Radius-TWC release, “It Follows,” should have no problem carrying effective indie terror into the new year. The film garnered critical acclaim at both Cannes and AFI.
Fresh off her breakthrough role in “The Guest,” up-and-comer Maika Monroe stars as Jay, a high schooler with romanticized dreams of love, relationships and sex. After she loses her virginity, however, something sinister starts to haunt her. It may sound like a painful horror cliche, but this expressionistic teen horror film is way smarter as it not only delivers genuine fright, but also a sharp deconstruction of the genre.
A horror favorite on the 2014 festival circuit, expect “It Follows” to boost the profiles of star Monroe and filmmaker David Robert Mitchell. You can check out the hypnotic new trailer below.
RADiUS-TWC will release the film on March 13.
