ABC Puts Whoopi Goldberg Between a Rock and a Hard Place

As I have
said numerous times on this very site, television is a cutthroat
business. And the latest example of that is what happened yesterday with
Whoopi Goldberg and the ABC network

Yesterday it
was reported (HERE) that Goldberg has made a deal to star in a new comedy pilot for the network called “Delores and Jermaine,” in which she would play an ex-Washington D.C. cop and the estranged grandmother of a struggling comedian who moves in with her, after he’s
been kicked out of his house, and who “needs his youthful enthusiasm in her life
as much as he needs her old-school parenting.”

However, this
morning, the New York Post reports that may not
happen after all, since the network, according to insiders, has effectively told
Goldberg that she cannot leave her current show, “The View,” for any other outside

Seems as if
ABC is still reeling from the sudden departure of former co-host Rosie O’Donnell,
due to personal reasons, after the hoopla surrounding her coming back to the show this season.. In addition, ABC is still stinging from embarrassment, from when it was leaked that they had been planning to dump Rosie
Perez from the show, but changed their minds after their plans were revealed.

With the current
shaky situation, they can’t afford to lose Goldberg – who is
basically the star of the show, and who reportedly gets paid $5 million a year (which is actually pretty low, considering what other stars get paid on hit shows) – or have her appearances drastically reduced, because of her commitment to another show; even on their own network.

herself has said that her contract with the network does allow her the freedom
to do work on other TV shows and movies, but she also adds that, “I never put down the fact that I have a
really good job, but I also have bosses. They make decisions . . . sometimes
you don’t like them and you have to live with them.”
