'Going Clear' Scientology Doc Heads to Vimeo in September

Scientology

Vimeo has inked a deal to acquire exclusive US download-to-own rights to “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” a Sundance Film Festival debut slated to premiere on HBO March 16.

This means that, though no price plan has been set, “Going Clear” will be available to download via the Internet-video platform in September 2015. In an ongoing effort to lure buzzy indie projects, Vimeo recently landed Spike Lee’s “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus” a full month ahead of its theatrical release. One of Sundance’s hottest tickets, “Going Clear” is a documentary adaptation of Lawrence Wright’s book of the same name which chronicles the history of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and the dubious, behind-the-scenes goings-on of his Church. The film will have an awards-qualifying theatrical run ahead of the HBO debut.

The deal was concluded with Content Media Corporation, which owns a 50% stake in workhorse director Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions. His next film, “Steve Jobs: Man in the Machine,” premieres at SXSW.
