Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen star in Japanese photographer-turned-filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya’s “Last Knights,” which centers on a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor.
Owen plays Raiden, a hero who rises up with his men on a mission of revenge for their dishonored master, played by Freeman, and take on a corrupt ruler in Aksel Hennie.
It’s a project that’s actually been sitting around for a few years (it was initially announced, and shot in 2012).
Director Kiriya’s last 2 films – “Goemon” (based on a Japanese folk legend that echoes the story of Robin Hood) and “Casshern” (a live-action sci-fi movie based on the 1973 Japanese animé of the same name) – where what you’d call epic, fantastical, stylized works of art that are heavy on the visual elements. So I suppose we could assume “Last Knights” will have similar characteristics.
Kiriya directed from a screenplay by Michael Konyves.
Lionsgate has set an April 3rd release for the film, simultaneously on VOD and in theaters.
