Watch: A Civil Rights Icon and Music Legend Gets the Documentary Treatment in 'Mavis!' Trailer

Debut filmmaker Jessica Edwards brings the life of Mavis Staples to the screen in the anticipated documentary “Mavis!,” which is set for its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival next month.

The newly-released trailer (featured below) introduces the upcoming documentary as a gospel- and soul-fueled, decades-spanning biography that begins at the start of the Civil Rights Movement and ends in the present day, with Staples as enthusiastic and prolific as ever. Just four years ago, her album “You Are Not Alone” won the Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Before breaking out on her own, Staples started out performing with her family as the Staples Singers, a group The Guardian said “soundtracked the Civil Rights Movement.” If this tease is any indication, “Mavis!” will be the kind of movie that rouses and inspires, honoring its subject and the movement.
