The New Yorker invites viewers to watch the online premiere of the official 2015 Sundance selection “Marcela & Rock” from an interactive documentary called “The And,” where each short film focuses on real-life couples asking each other incredibly intimate questions. The couples answer these questions honestly and candidly, as tears and laughter flow on film.
“The And” offers and intimate and authentic portrait of real relationships. In this installment, we meet Rock, and ex-convict on parole, and his wife Marcela who have been married for seven years. In this brutally honest conversation, the couple’s answers are touchingly beautiful, funny, complex and sometimes uncomfortable to watch.
“Why do you love me?” questions Marcela. “Everything that I’ve ever thought about having in my life from the very first time I was incarcerated at 13, I have everything that I’ve ever desired in life. You’ve assisted with accomplishing everything I knew I needed in my life so that I wouldn’t go back to prison, so that I wouldn’t be involved in the street,” he replies.
