Watch Trailer for Provocative Short Film “Cancer Pimp”

Making its
premiere this month at the Pan African Film Festival, the new short film Cancer
Pimp takes what might seem, at first, a seen-it-before premise. but puts a
completely different spin on it.

the film centers around
a pimp in Los Angeles (played by Blake Morris) who faces a personal crisis when
he diagnosed with cancer which in turns changes his whole purpose in life and especially his relationships with the young, vulnerable women that
he exploits.

Written and directed
by Oakland native Elton Loud, who is a practicing attorney, Cancer Pimp is his first
film was based on his novel Little Girls: A Short Story Novella, which explores
the underage sex trade in Oakland.

But why
focus on this subject? Loud answers that making was his “attempt to further
shed light on this topic and put a face to the various characters that make up
this underworld”.

And he further
added that he was inspired by actual experiences that he has had as a lawyer
and that:

“When I
noticed many American cities were having problems controlling the surge in
underage prostitution in the wake of changing attitudes to drug sentencing, I
immediately had questions that needed answering.  As a writer I was less concerned with the
headlines of the news stories covering this topic—that was just the surface of
the individuals involved.  I was more
interested in the substance of who these people were.  Much like defendants that enter a courtroom
defined only by the crimes they were alleged to have committed, I knew there
was more to each person’s story”.

Which brings
up the question is to why focus on a main character with a serious illness:

“A serious
illness like cancer exposes the conflict between the confident exterior the
protagonist…shows the world and the weakened state that is his reality.  When (he) is forced to reveal his illness to
his main girls we get to see firsthand the complicated relationship that forms
between a pimp and his exploited sex workers.
While the story deals with the rough reality of the sex trade, it is
really about the way in which we all attempt to reconcile our past actions in
light of an uncertain future”.

The short
will be on the film festival circuit tour after PAFF and below is the trailer:
