'Colossal Orgy Sequence' Shows 'True Detective' Has Definitely Taken Criticisms of Misogyny to Heart

Although the critical reputation of “True Detective” remains robust, it’s still stained by accusations of misogyny, centered on the fact that while series creator Nic Pizzolatto found plenty of ways to indulge the dorm-room philosophizing of Rustin Cohle, he had trouble making room for female characters who weren’t naked or corpses or both.

Fear, not though: Nic Pizzolatto has heard your cries, including several genuine women among Season 2’s cast: Rachel McAdams as a detective with “uncompromising ethics” (read: a pain in the ass); Kelly Reilly as a “former D-list actress” and wife to Vince Vaughn’s big-time sleazeball; plus Abigail Spencer as “sexual assault survivor Alicia” and Leven Ramblin as “drug-addled beauty Sophia.” It’s quite a variety pack. Now comes news from the Hollywood Reporter that former porn stars Amia Miley and Peta Jensen were cast as extras in ” a deliriously vast, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’-caliber orgy sequence involving dozens of naked bodies,” although they were reportedly not among the onscreen participants. In fact, it seems their casting had nothing to do with their previous employment, although willingness to get naked was a job requirement. Either way, it’s pretty clear that Pizzolatto has heard the complaints that “True Detective’s” first season devoted too much screen time to gratuitous female nudity, and has responded with an upraised middle finger. Our own reaction looks something like this:
