Focus Features has just acquired North American rights (as well as international locales like Latin America, India, South Korea and most of Eastern Europe) to “Suffragette.” Directed by Sarah Gavron, and with a screenplay by Abi Morgan (who also wrote “The Iron Lady”), the hotly-anticipated film follows Maud (Carey Mulligan) as she finds her way into the women’s suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Maud quickly becomes a foot soldier within a group of women (led, of course, by Meryl Streep as Emmeline Pankhurst) who put it all on the line for the right to vote — from their livelihoods and personal relationships to their physical safety and lives. The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff, and Brendan Gleeson.
Focus plans a domestic release for “Suffragette” in the fall, or in other words, just in time for awards season.
