READ MORE: Sundance Review: Rodney Ascher’s ‘The Nightmare’ is One of the Scariest Documentaries Ever
Gravitas Adventures has acquired rights to “The Nightmare,” directed by Rodney Ascher (“ROOM 237”) before its premiere tonight at SXSW.
The film uses atmospheric and cinematic recreations to get audiences in the heads of those suffering with sleep paralysis, a condition in which people regain consciousness during their dreams, but are unable to move or cry out for help. The subjects of the film share eerily similar visions of malevolent, near-human beings that grow more and more aggressive the longer the sleep paralysis occurs. Ascher, who has first hand knowledge of sleep paralysis, brings the full intensity of this experience to the screen while maintaining respect and empathy for his subject.
“‘The Nightmare'” is uniquely chilling,” said Mia Bruno of Gravitas Ventures. “It ignites what is already lurking within our own brains and lets loose all the monsters we house within. We are thrilled to work with Rodney Ascher and his team and we expect this film to keep people awake at night for a long time.”
“The Nightmare” will premiere at SXSW in the Midnight section tonight, and it will be released in North American theaters and VOD on June 5, 2015.
