A domestic trailer has been released for Maya Forbes’ autobiographical “Infinitely Polar Bear,” a comedy about Stuart (Mark Ruffalo), a loving and dedicated father and husband who is dealing with manic depression. This trailer indicates that the story is told from the perspective of one of his daughters.
Forbes, who is making her directorial debut, also penned the script. In an interview with Women and Hollywood, she shared, “I wrote [the] script based on my childhood, growing up with a manic-depressive father and a mother who had to make some very hard choices. I feel lots of families face the many issues I explore in the film.”
Zoe Saldana plays the role of Forbes’ mother Maggie, who, after being accepted into Columbia in New York, suggests that Stuart remain in Boston with their daughters and take on the role of lead caregiver. The trailer shows us Stuart’s attempts to establish and maintain a routine for his children (breakfast is the most important meal of the day!) and some of the emotional and situational complications that arise from having a bipolar dad. When asked by her children if she regrets marrying their dad, Maggie doesn’t hesitate to answer “Never.” This seems like a lovely love story — about the relationship between Stuart and Maggie, but also between the girls and their father.
“Infinitely Polar Bear” opens June 19.
