Now that it’s been confirmed that Viola Davis has indeed been cast as Amanda Waller in Warner Bros.’ 2016 “Suicide Squad” film adaptation, the work begins as the actress begins to flesh out the character she’s going to play, when shooting eventually begins.
And based on an interview she gave to Comic Book Resources about the project, it’s quite clear that she’s really looking forward to it.
“She’s badass!” Davis said while on the red carpet at the GLAAD Media Awards over the weekend, adding that she could relate to the character: “She’s unapologetic. Everything that I’m reading and studying about her: unapologetic, no humor, just brutal. That’s me!”
And finally, she said, “Listen, she gets to use a gun. It’s my fantasy. Now, I would never do that in life, but when I get a gun on a set, it does something to me.”
This is hilarious!
Recall, in January, she shared publicly that she would love to have a role on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” – one in which she’d get to kill people! Clearly Ms Davis is determined to play bloodthirsty characters! And, as I’ve said on this blog numerous times in the past, I’m all for her taking on roles in which she gets to play bad-asses! I think she’ll kill them all (pun intended). She has the physical presence, the voice, and the acting chops. I’m looking forward to seeing what she and J-Lo do in the revenge thriller “Lila & Eve” in which they play mothers who set out to hunt the murderer of one of their sons and get a lot more than they bargained for.
As previously reported, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey were said to be the studio’s top choices for Amanda Waller in “Suicide Squad.”
For the uninitiated, Amanda Waller is the leader of the Squad (in the same way Nick Fury leads S.H.I.E.L.D.), who you might remember as the character Angela Bassett played in the “Green Lantern” movie, and by the younger Cynthia Addai-Robinson on the “Arrow” TV series.
Comic book enthusiasts will be familiar with Waller’s tough-as-nails personality and intimidating presence.
Davis joins an ensemble cast that includes Will Smith, who’ll be playing the character known as Deadshot, as well as Margot Robbie, Jared, Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. Unbelievably, this will be the very first time that Will Smith and Viola Davis will appear in a movie together.
The “Suicide Squad” series follows a group of super-villains who are forced to go on covert missions for a shadowy government agency, in exchange for commuted sentences.
WB plans to release the movie 2016.
