In an unusual set-up, President Obama sat down with David Simon, creator of HBO’s acclaimed drama “The Wire,” for a conversation about the series, its chronicling the many aspects of the drug trade in Baltimore, and its real-life influence on the neighborhoods, schools, police and politics the series portrays.
It’s a rather candid chat and worth a listen, as they unpack the consequences communities have to carry as a result of the so-called “war on drugs,” as well as challenges law enforcement face. Ultimately, it’s a discussion on drug law reform – one of many items of the President’s campaign to-do list; to reform mandatory minimum sentencing laws.
Obama also shared that Omar (the character played by Michael K. Williams, is his favorite character from the series.
The interview was produced by the White House and released Thursday on YouTube.
